The total number of healthcare mergers and acquisitions hit a record high in 2018, and dozens of deals have been announced so far this year.
Here are 13 transactions involving hospitals and health systems that were announced or finalized in the past month:
1. Penn Highlands Healthcare adds 5th hospital
J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, a 71-bed, nonprofit community hospital in Huntingdon, Pa., joined DuBois, Pa.-based Penn Highlands Healthcare on June 1.
2. Children's National, HSC Health Care to combine
HSC Health Care System and Children's National Health System signed a definitive agreement to combine the two Washington, D.C.-based systems.
3. 25-bed Ohio hospital to join WVU Hospital's network
Barnesville Hospital, a 25-bed critical access hospital in Belmont County, Ohio, joined WVU Hospitals and the West Virginia University Health System on June 1.
4. Mass General to acquire second New Hampshire hospital
Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital officials announced May 23 that they have finalized plans to acquire Exeter (N.H.) Health Resources.
5. CHS continues hospital sell-off spree with deal in Texas
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems entered into an agreement May 23 to sell College Station (Texas) Medical Center to CHI St. Joseph Health, a four-hospital system based in Bryan, Texas.
6. Illinois health system strikes deal to add 5th hospital
Decatur (Ill.) Memorial Hospital entered into an agreement to join Memorial Health System, a four-hospital system based in Springfield, Ill.
7. CHS to sell 2 Florida hospitals
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems signed definitive agreements to sell two Florida hospitals to Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based Adventist Health System Sunbelt Healthcare.
8. Maryland hospitals pursue merger
Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Md., and Doctors Community Health System, a single-hospital system based in Lanham, Md., announced merger plans.
9. 2 Wisconsin health systems eye merger
Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic Health System and La Crosse, Wis.-based Gundersen Health System are exploring a merger that would create a 13-hospital rural healthcare network, the organizations said May 7.
10. Quorum divests Texas hospital
Brentwood, Tenn.-based Quorum Health completed the sale of Scenic Mountain Medical Center, a 146-bed hospital in Big Spring, Texas, to Dallas-based Steward Health Care.
11. Bon Secours to merge with Ireland's largest private health system
Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health signed a letter of intent to merge with Ireland's largest private healthcare provider, Bon Secours Health System in Dublin.
12. Atrium, Wake Forest to create academic health system
Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health signed a memorandum of understanding to build an academic healthcare system with Wake Forest Baptist Health and Wake Forest University, both in Winston-Salem, N.C.
13. Chicago hospital pitches $22.5M deal to expand footprint
Thorek Memorial Hospital in Chicago filed an application with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board to acquire Methodist Hospital in Chicago for $22.5 million. Thorek said the combination of the two hospitals has the potential to benefit the community through cost savings and improved patient care.
