HMA Assures Trauma, Charity Care Will Continue in Bayfront Transaction

City council members in St. Petersburg, Fla., are scheduled to vote Thursday on a joint venture agreement in which Naples, Fla.-based hospital chain Health Management Associates would purchase an 80 percent interest in Bayfront Health System, according to a report by the Tampa Bay Times.

The other 20 percent of Bayfront's $202 million purchase price would be bought by a non-profit foundation, Bayfront Health Education & Research Organization, newly established by the two health systems.

Primary concerns for the council is fear Health Management would reduce charity care and discontinue trauma care at the hospital, both of which Health Management officials vehemently denied at a council hearing yesterday, according to the report.

Current Bayfront President and CEO Sue Brody said if the council denied the affiliation, it would seek a new partner to help alleviate the system's financial struggles, according to the report.
