Several large hospitals and health systems announced plans this year to expand overseas.
Here are four planning to branch outside of the U.S.:
1. Baylor College of Medicine (Houston). Baylor College of Medicine is in the early stages of developing a medical center in Shanghai with a Chinese real estate development company, the health system announced Nov. 4.
2. UPMC (Pittsburgh). UPMC broke ground Oct. 28 on a hospital in Chengdu, China. It will be the first of five hospitals that UPMC will jointly operate with Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group.
It also signed an agreement in February with a university in Kazakhstan fully integrate patient care, education and research at the university's hospitals and clinics.
UPMC also revealed plans Jan. 8 to build a second, 250-bed hospital facility in Palermo, Italy.
3. Sanford Health (Sioux Falls, S.D.) In a move to expand its international presence, Sanford Health acquired a minority equity stake in Hospital Metropolitano, a health system in Costa Rica.
4. Bon Secours Mercy Health (Cincinnati). Bon Secours Mercy Health has completed its merger with Bon Secours Health System in Dublin, Ireland's largest private healthcare provider.
