The following hospital mergers, acquisitions and general transactions took place in October, beginning with the most recent.

1. CVS Health enters into clinical affiliations with 4 health systems
CVS Health entered into clinical affiliations with Baptist Health System in Birmingham, Ala., Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems affiliated hospitals, Tennova Healthcare in KnoxvilleTenn., and Premier Health in Dayton, Ohio.

2. Sale of Monroe Hospital to Prime Healthcare approved by bankruptcy judge
The sale of Bloomington, Ind.-based Monroe Hospital to Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services was approved by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge James Carr.

3. Cayuga Medical Center, Schuyler Hospital partner to create new health network
Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, N.Y., and Montour Falls, N.Y.-based Schuyler Hospital created a new health network, called Cayuga Health System, that is designed to include other hospitals that could help improve healthcare in the region.

4. Abington Health, Jefferson Health sign letter of intent to merge
Abington (Pa.) Health and Philadelphia-based Jefferson Health took one step closer to merging by signing a letter of intent.

5. Daughters of Charity Health System submits sale application to Attorney General
Daughters of Charity Health System — a six-hospital network based in Los Altos Hills, Calif. — submitted an application to the California Attorney General requesting consent to transfer control of its hospitals to Prime Healthcare Services.

6. Virginia Mason, Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital in affiliation talks
Yakima (Wash.) Valley Memorial Hospital and Seattle-based Virginia Mason Medical Center signed a letter of intent to affiliate.

7. Optum announces acquisition of Alere Health
Optum, a division of Minneapolis-based UnitedHealth Group, entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Waltham, Mass.-based healthcare diagnostics and solutions provider Alere Health.

8. Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center to partner with Omnicell
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, in Winston-Salem, N.C., announced a collaborative partnership with healthcare solutions provider Omnicell.

9. Lancaster General Health, UPenn Health System exploring stronger ties
Lancaster (Pa.) General Health and Philadelphia-based University of Pennsylvania Health System signed a memorandum of understanding to explore ways to integrate the two systems beyond the strategic alliance they entered into earlier this year.

10. Mercy Health System, Rockford Health System to merge
Janesville, Wis.-based Mercy Health System and Rockford (Ill.) Health System announced they are merging to create a five-hospital nonprofit health system that will provide healthcare services to patients in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

11. Tufts Medical Center, Lowell General Hospital finalize formation of new health system
Tufts Medical Center in Boston and Lowell (Mass.) General Hospital finalized the creation of their new health system in Massachusetts, known as Wellforce.

12. HCA to acquire urgent care operator CareNow
Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America signed an agreement to acquire Dallas-based CareNow, which has 24 urgent care centers in the Dallas-Forth Worth area.

13. South Nassau Communities Hospital acquires Long Beach Medical Center's assets
South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, N.Y., closed on an asset purchase agreement to acquire the assets of 162-bed Long Beach (N.Y.) Medical Center, which closed in October 2012 after sustaining heavy flooding damage from Hurricane Sandy.

14. Spectrum Health, Pennock Health to affiliate
Hastings, Mich.-based Pennock Health and Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Spectrum Health signed a letter of intent to affiliate.

15. Centura Health and Morton County Health System form strategic affiliation
Englewood Colo.-based Centura Health and Elkhart, Kan.-based Morton County Health System signed an affiliation agreement aimed at promoting the sharing of best practices and improving healthcare for residents of southwestern Kansas.

16. Dignity Health, Adeptus Health announce joint venture
San Francisco-based Dignity Health and Lewisville, Texas-based Adeptus Health announced plans to partner in a joint effort to meet the growing demand for access to quality medical care in Arizona.

17. Geisinger Health System, Holy Spirit Health System affiliation approved
The Pennsylvania Attorney General and the Pennsylvania Department of Health approved an affiliation between Camp Hill, Pa.-based Holy Spirit Health System and Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health System.

18. Hackensack University Health Network, Meridian Health to merge
Hackensack (N.J.) University Health Network and Neptune, N.J-based Meridian Health signed a memorandum of understanding to consider merging.

19. TriHealth, McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital agree to affiliate
Cincinnati-based TriHealth and McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Ohio signed a letter of intent to affiliate.

20. Alecto Healthcare Services to acquire Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital-WNJ
For profit Alecto Healthcare Services, headquartered in Los Angeles, entered into a definitive agreement to acquire 237-bed Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital-WNJ in Sherman.

21. Prime Healthcare Services to acquire majority of Carondelet Health's facilities
Prime Healthcare Services signed a definitive agreement to acquire hospitals, long-term care facilities and other assets of Carondelet Health in Kansas City, Mo., which is part of St. Louis-based Ascension.

22. Baptist Health to partner with University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
Baptist Health in Jacksonville, Fla., signed a letter of intent to partner with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

23. Baptist Health South Florida signs affiliation agreement with Bethesda Health
Following a preliminary non-binding letter of intent, Miami-based Baptist Health South Florida signed a formal affiliation agreement with Boynton Beach, Fla.-based Bethesda Health and Bethesda Hospital East.

24. Daughters of Charity Health System to sell 6 hospitals to Prime Healthcare Services
The board of directors of Daughters of Charity Health System agreed to sell its hospitals to Prime Healthcare Services.

25. Kindred to acquire Gentiva for $1.8B
Kindred Healthcare, a post-acute care services provider based in Louisville, Ky., and Atlanta-based home health and hospice services provider Gentiva Health Services reached a definitive merger agreement.

26. UPMC to co-manage cancer hospital in Baltics
Pittsburgh-based UPMC partnered with Baltic healthcare company GK Klinika Group.

27. St. John's Episcopal Hospital forms partnership with Beacon Health Partners
Rockville, Centre, N.Y.-based Catholic Health Services of Long Island and St. John's Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway, N.Y., acquired a 50 percent stake in Westbury, N.Y.-based Beacon Health Partners — an independent physician network.

28. University of Virginia Medical Center, Culpeper Regional Health finalize merger
The University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville became the majority owner of 70-bed Culpeper (Va.) Regional Hospital.

29. Vatican approves Saint Anthony's, OSF Healthcare affiliation
Saint Anthony's Health System in Alton, Ill., received canonical approval from the Vatican to affiliate with Peoria, Ill.-based OSF Healthcare System.

30. Presence Health offered $30M for Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center
Chicago-based Community First Healthcare of Illinois offered Presence Health in Chicago $30 million for Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center.

31. LifePoint Hospitals chosen to form joint venture with Watertown Regional Medical Center
The Board of Directors of Watertown (Wis.) Regional Medical Center chose Brentwood, Tenn.-based LifePoint Hospitals to form a joint venture partnership, which includes significant capital investments in WRMC.

32. Community Health Systems acquires Natchez Regional Medical Center
Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems acquired substantially all of 179-bed Natchez (Miss.) Regional Medical Center's assets.

33. CHS subsidiary to assume operation of Gaffney Medical Center from Novant
Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health signed a non-binding letter of intent under which a subsidiary of Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems will take over managing and operating Gaffney (S.C.) Medical Center.

34. Adventist, Murray Medical Center to enter long-term lease agreement
Adventist Health System, based in Altamonte Springs, Fla., and The Hospital Authority of Murray County plan to enter into a long-term lease agreement, under which Adventist will manage Murray Medical Center in Chatsworth, Ga.

35. Community Hospital Anderson cancer program affiliates with MD Anderson Cancer Network
Community Hospital Anderson (Ind.) became an official member of The University of Texas' MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston), a nationally-renowned program.
