Brooklyn's Long Island College Hospital Will Receive Funds to Merge With SUNY Downstate

Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., will receive the $62 million in state funds needed to save the hospital through a merger with SUNY Downstate Medical Center, also in Brooklyn, according to a The Brooklyn Paper news release.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday the state would honor a previous commitment by former Gov. David Paterson to help fund the merger through a program to improve efficiencies in the state's hospitals.

Earlier in the week, Gov. Cuomo announced the funds would be delayed as a part of cost-costing efforts. If the funds were withheld, LICH was expected to run out of cash in March, threatening its closure.
