10 Things to Know About Carroll Hospital Center

Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, Md., is a non-profit, acute-care hospital serving residents of Carroll (Md.) County.

1. John Sernulka serves as president and CEO.

2. Kevin Kelbly serves as vice president of finance and CFO.

3. The hospital has 193 beds.

4. The hospital has 1,301 total employees.  

5. In 2012, the hospital performed 8,485 inpatient and outpatient surgeries, 1,128 births and 132,152 outpatient imaging procedures and had 15,083 inpatient admissions/ outpatient observations, 56,618 emergency department visits and 110,832 physician office visits.

6. In 2011, the hospital recorded $216.3 million in gross charges and $1.8 million in net losses, according to the American Hospital Directory.

7. The hospital received a Patient Safety Excellence Award from Healthgrades in 2013.  

8. In 1947, the state of Maryland's Hospital Survey and Plan review committee recommended Carroll County establish a 50-bed hospital, though the idea for the hospital had been discussed in the county's medical community as early as 1917. After a citizen's committee was formed and public support grew, Carroll County General Hospital was opened in 1961. The hospital underwent several expansions in the following years, and the hospital's name was changed to Carroll Hospital Center in 2003 to commemorate an $80 million expansion, the largest to date.       

9. Carroll Hospital Center has many environmentally friendly initiatives in place, and won the EcoLeadership Award from the Alliance for Workplace Excellence two years in a row.  

10. Access Carroll, a joint partnership between the hospital, Carroll County Health Department and The Partnership for a Healthier Carroll County, provides free medical care to uninsured and low-income residents of Carroll County.
