10 Things to Know About The Queen's Medical Center

The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu is the leading medical referral center in the Pacific Basin and has a long, storied history of care in Hawaii.

Here are 10 things to know about The Queen's Medical Center.

1. Art Ushijima is the president of The Queen's Medical Center and also serves as president and CEO of its parent organization, The Queen's Health Systems.

2. Richard Keene serves as CFO of The Queen's Medical Center. He first started at the hospital in 2007 and previously was CFO of the Bank of Hawaii.

3. The Queen's Medical Center is licensed for 505 acute-care beds and 28 sub-acute beds and is the largest hospital in the state.

4. More than 3,000 employees and 1,200 physicians are part of The Queen's Medical Center, making it one of the largest employers in the area.

5. The Queen's Medical Center reported total revenue of $1.45 billion in 2011, according to the American Hospital Directory. Net income reached $31.5 million for a 2.2 percent profit margin.

6. U.S. News and World Report ranked the Queen's Medical Center as one of the top hospitals in Hawaii, and it also achieved Magnet status in 2009.

7. The Queen's Medical Center was originally founded as The Queen's Hospital in 1859 by Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV. It is the oldest hospital in Hawaii and the only one in the United States established by royalty.

8. Most of the buildings on the medical center's campus have Hawaiian names to honor Hawaiian royalty or other prominent figures that helped develop the hospital.

9. William Hillebrand, MD, was The Queen's Medical Center's first physician. He also was a botanist and planted many rare and exotic plants on the hospital grounds, such as the Bombax and Kapok, and they are still around the hospital today.

10. Cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons at The Queen's Medical Center were the first in Hawaii to implant a nonsurgical heart valve device to treat patients with failing aortic health valves through transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Queen's is the only hospital in Hawaii to offer TAVR, as well.
