10 Things to Know About The Medical Center of Aurora

When tragedy struck Aurora, Colo., with the movie theater shooting this past July, The Medical Center of Aurora was one of several hospitals that stepped up to help those at risk. It admitted seven patients who were afflicted in the rampage.

Here are 10 things to know about The Medical Center of Aurora.

1. Richard Hammett is the current CEO of The Medical Center of Aurora. He officially started Aug. 1, 2012, and previously was the COO of St. David's Medical Center in Austin, Texas.

2. Bill Voloch serves as CFO of The Medical Center of Aurora.

3. The Medical Center of Aurora is licensed for 346 beds and is a Level II trauma center. The hospital and its three campuses are also part of HealthONE, a joint venture with Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America.

4. The Medical Center of Aurora employs roughly 1,200 people and has more than 450 physicians on its medical staff.

5. According to the most recent financials posted at the American Hospital Directory, The Medical Center of Aurora recorded $1.28 billion in gross charges last year. Net income equaled $41.35 million for an operating margin of 3.2 percent.

6. According to the American Hospital Directory, The Medical Center of Aurora recorded nearly 12,000 inpatient and outpatient surgeries last year and admitted 14,000 patients into its emergency room.

7. U.S. News & World Report ranked The Medical Center of Aurora fourth in Colorado and the Denver metro area for overall quality this year. The hospital is also "high-performing" in 10 adult specialties.

8. The Colorado shooting tragedy took place July 20 at a premiere viewing of Dark Night Rises. The Medical Center of Aurora received 18 patients initially from the event and admitted seven patients. Actor Christian Bale of Dark Knight Rises visited the hospital a few days after the shooting to meet with several of the victims.

9. The Medical Center of Aurora, founded in 1974, was the first community hospital in Denver's metro area to receive Magnet recognition for nursing excellence.

10. In 2001, The Medical Center of Aurora developed the Cardiac Alert program with its physicians, the Colorado Heart Institute and others to ensure emergency medical services have the right training and equipment to identify heart attack patients and alert hospitals of their arrival.
