What Are the Most Sought-After Physician Specialties?

What are the latest trends in physician demand, recruitment and employment? Here are five major findings from Merritt Hawkins' 2012 Review of Physician Recruiting Incentives.

• Sixty-three percent of search assignments featured hospital employment of physicians. That's a 7 percent increase from 2010-2011.

• Primary care physicians, namely family physicians and general internists, remain the most sought-after providers by hospitals, medical groups and other healthcare organizations.

• General surgeons were the fifth-most requested search assignment in 2011-2012 and the most requested surgical specialty. This specialty is in high demand as the number of general surgeons per population is on the decline.

• Anesthesiology was not among the top 20 most-requested search assignments. Radiology also fell in the ranks. In 2003, radiologists were the most requested specialists, but they ranked 18th in 2011-2012.

• Only 1 percent of search assignments featured a solo practicing setting. Eleven years ago, 22 percent of search assignments featured solo practices.
