United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, N.Y., has announced it will become a teaching hospital in 2013 in order to address the looming physician shortage, according to a report by The Daily News.
UMMC's new affiliation with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is an effort to bring young physicians to Batavia in hopes that they will stay in the area and open their own primary care practices after their residency.
Four students will be accepted to the program each year and UMMC will pay for them to live in Batavia and work at the hospital, according to the report.
