Two Georgia medical schools will receive additional funding this year, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) recently announced the state will give $70 million to Atlanta-based Morehouse School of Medicine and Macon, Ga.-based Mercer University School of Medicine.
The funds are from Georgia's settlement agreement with the federal government regarding disputed Medicaid payments.
"It is only fitting that we in turn invest this money in healthcare education programs, particularly those that prioritize placing primary care physician graduates in high-demand areas throughout the state," Gov. Deal said, according to the report.
Morehouse School of Medicine plans to use the funds to increase enrollment, while Mercer University School of Medicine will utilize it to find better ways to serve rural sections of the state.
