Renown Health on Nov. 12 announced a new clinical affiliation with the University of Nevada and the Reno School of Medicine — all based in Reno, Nev. — to address the state's physician shortage.
Nevada ranks 45th in the U.S. for active physicians per 100,000 people and 48th for primary care physicians per 100,000 people, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges' 2019 physician workforce profile. Renown's new affiliation aims to develop innovative ways to train and retain the next generation of physicians.
As part of the affiliation, Renown established a scholarship fund to support University of Nevada medical students and physician assistant students. The goal of the fund is to award $350,000 annually based on need and merit.
In 2021-22, 20 first-year and third-year medical students will receive $15,000 each, and five second-year physician assistant students will receive $10,000 each.
