University of Nevada's schools in Reno and Las Vegas are nearing a preliminary partnership that could result in a new medical school in southern Nevada, according to a Las Vegas Sun report.
The memorandum of understanding outlines a vision for University of Nevada, Reno and University of Nevada, Las Vegas to collaboratively create a UNLV medical school that would open within the next several years. The idea of an UNLV medical school has been on the table for decades, according to the report.
UNR operates the University of Nevada School of Medicine. It's arranged so medical students take courses in Reno and then complete training at University Medical Center in Las Vegas.
Supporters say a medical school in Las Vegas would accelerate clinical research, attract new businesses and help the city become a destination for medical tourism. They also say the current arrangement with UNR does not alleviate southern Nevada's physician shortage.
Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Dan Klaich, UNR President Marc Johnson, University of Nevada School of Medicine Dean Tom Schwenk, MD, and UNLV President Neal Smatresk are expected to sign an agreement by the end of this week, according to the report.
