"Naïve" to Think ACOs Can Go Anywhere Without EHRs

Though EHRs are no longer a prerequisite for physicians participating in accountable care organizations, the tool is still necessary for the model to realize a true return on investment.

A recent briefing from PricewaterhouseCoopers reveals how closely EHRs must be intertwined in ACOs for the system to be profitable. Here are a few key points from that briefing, which can be read in full here (pdf).

• There is an overlap of 58 percent between the quality measures required of an ACO and measures to achieve EHR meaningful use. This statistic alone illustrates the close relationship between the two.
• EHR interoperability and population health analytics are necessary so ACOs don't "fly blind." Data based on CMS claims won't be adequate to manage population health, as it will not contain the appropriate level of data. Clinical data and robust analytic capabilities are necessary, and it's "naive" to think otherwise, according to the brief.
• Mobilization will be key. Mobile devices, remote technologies and telemedicine opportunities should be considered infrastructure requirements for population health management.
• Analytics and EHRs will heighten engagement, communication and sharing of best practices. EHRs can help influence patient behavior through improved patient engagement, drive evidence-based protocols for participating physicians and provide feedback on any variations in care.
