Primary Care Workforce Could Get Boost From Obama's 2015 Budget

President Barack Obama's budget proposal for fiscal year 2015 includes funding increases for primary care workforce development programs, according to the National Association of Community Health Centers.

The president's budget proposal, which will be released next week, includes the following:

• $3.95 billion over six years for the National Health Services Corps to grow the program
• $5.23 billion over 10 years to train primary care residents in team-based care, such as how to treat patients in accountable care organizations
• $5.44 billion to extend higher payments to Medicaid providers

"The president's primary care workforce proposal recognizes that without meaningful access to primary care, the promise of a new insurance card will too often go unrealized," Tom Van Coverden, president and CEO of the NACHC, said in a news release. "If passed into law, these proposals would be a game changer, incentivizing the next generation of aspiring clinicians to enter primary care and to serve those most in need."
