Physician Groups Take New Stance on Medicare ACOs

Influential physician groups, such as the American Medical Association and American Medical Group Association, are beginning to warm up to CMS' accountable care organization program.

The groups had previously expressed disappointment with CMS' proposed rule for ACOs, which they found overly burdensome and costly. The release of the final rule, however, has prompted medical organizations to reconfigure their stance on the concept.

In a blog post, AMA President Peter W. Carmel, MD, said "what seemed like a missed opportunity for a valuable new health care model only a few weeks ago now seems like a possibility — and not just for a select few health care systems with advanced infrastructure and technology, but for physicians in a wide variety of practice settings around the country."

AMGA President and CEO Donald W. Fisher, PhD, CAE, penned a thank-you note to CMS Administrator Donald Berwick, MD. In the letter, Dr. Fisher wrote, "In all the years I have been following rule-making, I have never seen a proposed rule change in its final version as was the case for ACOs — and for the better!"
