Additional federal funding is needed to train more Black physicians and diversify the healthcare workforce, the leaders of several historically Black medical schools said during a May 12 roundtable discussion at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta.
University leaders discussed numerous strategies to increase the number of Black physicians in the healthcare workforce, including by enhancing current infrastructure, supporting clinical research opportunities at HBCUs and funding additional residency and fellowship slots, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) joined leaders from several HBCU medical schools, including Meharry Medical College, Howard University and Charles R. Drew University, for the discussion. The roundtable was hosted by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee., which Mr. Sanders chairs.
