Pittsburgh-based Highmark, an insurer, has filed trademark paperwork for a new physician practice management company, according to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report.
The management services organization, which will be called ProMed Xchange, will focus on organizational consulting, electronic medical record expertise and administrative support for medical groups. Establishing the MSO will give Highmark more opportunities to work with non-affiliated physician practices and potentially build relationships.
The MSO is another development in Highmark's transition from payor to provider, as its pending $475 million acquisition of West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh undergoes regulatory review.
UPMC, Highmark's provider rival, already offers a similar MSO to physicians called UPMC Practice Solutions, according to the report.
