Heart Specialists of Ohio, one of the few remaining independent cardiology groups in Columbus, has joined Ohio State University Medical Center, according to a Columbus Dispatch report.
The practice has eight physicians, four office locations and approximately 40,000 patients.
For years, Heart Specialists had been affiliated with Riverside Methodist Hospital, which is also in Columbus and owned by OhioHealth. The specialists approached OSU Medical Center and OhioHealth last winter about becoming employees of one of the hospital systems. The physicians were attracted to the teaching and research opportunities at Ohio State in the end, according to the report.
"We saw the writing on the wall here with private-practice cardiology and reimbursements dropping. It's not a feasible business model anymore," Barry George, MD, a cardiologist with Heart Specialists said in the report.
