Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare is expanding its residency programs in Florida to combat the physician shortage, according to a report by American Medical News.
HCA is planning on adding 400 to 600 residency positions at four hospitals in Florida in 2014, according to the report. HCA plans on subsidizing the new program through Medicare.
Adding the new residency positions will help with the nationwide physician program by training more care providers. Additionally, it could help HCA's hospitals with physician recruitment during the shortage, because many physicians end up practicing medicine where they did their residency training. While there is no guarantee the physicians will stick around after training, data shows that 48 percent of physicians practice medicine in the state where they did their residency, according to the report.
