Half of Participants in Model for ACOs Achieved Shared Savings in Year Four

Five of the 10 physician groups that participated in the Medicare Physician Group Practice Demonstration, the model for ACOs, will receive performance payments in the fourth year of the five-year project, according to a release by CMS.

The five successful programs, which were not named, received shared savings totaling $31.7 million, as part of their share of $38.7 million of total savings in the fourth year. To qualify for shared savings, participating groups had to achieve at least 2 percent of savings compared with benchmarks.

Turning to quality measures, all 10 participating groups achieved benchmark performance on at least 29 of the 32 measures reported in year four of the demonstration. Geisinger Clinic in Danville, Pa., Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic and Park Nicollet Health Services in St. Louis Park, Minn., achieved benchmark performance on all 32 measures.

The other physician groups participating in the demonstration were Billings (Mont.) Clinic, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic in Bedford, N.H., The Everett (Wash.) Clinic, Forsyth Medical Group in Winston-Salem, N.C., Middlesex Health System in Middletown, Conn., and St. John’s Health System in Springfield, Mo.
