Des Moines (Iowa) University medical school leaders are pushing to provide forgivable loans to medical students in Iowa who stay in the state after graduation, according to a KIMT report.
More than 40 percent of physicians in the state are over 49 years old, according to the report, and many of those physicians are beginning to retire. The forgivable loans are intended to incentivize young physicians to stay and practice in Iowa and relieve the impending physician shortage.
