As part of its Health Performance Incentive Program, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has paid $26 million to 54 hospitals and health centers in upstate New York for meeting quality improvements, according to a Democrat and Chronicle report.

According to the Democrat and Chronicle, the improvement areas include improved heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia outcomes; patient safety; patient satisfaction; and efficiency measures.
The program has been in place since 2004. Excellus has paid more than $145 million to participating hospitals since its inception, according to the report.
