Dartmouth College selects medical school dean: 5 things to know

Duane Compton, PhD, has been appointed dean of the Hanover, N.H.-based Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, effective immediately, according to the Geisel Insider.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Compton.

1. He was recruited to the institution in 1993 to serve as a professor in the school's biochemistry and cell biology departments.

2. He was appointed interim dean of the medical school in July 2014.

3. Prior to his appointment as interim dean, Dr. Compton served as the senior associate dean for research. He has also held positions as the associate director for basic sciences and as the director of the cancer mechanisms program at the Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center.

4. In 2013, Dr. Compton received the NIH MERIT Award for his research on the mechanisms of chromosome segregation during cell division. He has also authored more than 70 articles and his work has been displayed on the covers of 15 scientific journals.

5. "I am honored to be asked to serve as Geisel's dean. I look forward to working on their behalf to help strengthen our research and education programs," he said.
