Connecticut Bill Advancing APRN Independence Passes Senate

A bill in Connecticut that would allow advance practice registered nurses to practice without physician oversight passed through the state Senate Wednesday, according to a Hartford Business report.

Senate Bill No. 36 would allow APRNs to practice independently after working in collaboration with a physician for three years, according to the report. The goal is to ease the state's primary care physician shortage.

The Connecticut State Medical Society opposes the bill, saying APRNs are "not a substitute for a trained and licensed physician," according to the report.

Connecticut has about 4,000 APRNs.
