Blue Shield of California Invests $20M to Help Providers Launch ACOs

Blue Shield of California has distributed nearly $20 million in grants to 18 California hospitals, health systems, clinics and physician groups to help them participate more effectively in accountable care organizations.

The ACO grants are being made as part of Blue Shield's pledge that it would return money to its customers when its net income exceeds 2 percent of revenue. Grantees include Doctors Medical Center of Modesto ($650,000), which plans to deliver a post-acute discharge program that aims to reduce post-discharge readmissions and emergency room visits, improve primary care follow-up and reduce overall length of stay.
