Allina Health, BCBS of Minnesota Launch ACO-Like Health Plan

Minneapolis-based Allina Health and Eagan, Minn.-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota have announced a new health coverage option for large employers.

The new option, called Blue Choice featuring the Allina Health Network, is an expansion of choices available through Blue Choice, Blue Cross' defined contribution solution. It will be available in January 2013. With a defined contribution plan, the employer would give each employee a fixed dollar amount that the employee would use to choose from up to 20 Blue Choice plan designs.

Members enrolled in Blue Choice featuring the Allina Health Network will benefit from coordinated care management of chronic conditions. According to a report by the Pioneer Press, the new option is not an ACO but has many similar features — the payor and provider are coming together to bring affordable option to the marketplace.
