9 things residents consider when deciding where to practice

Meritt Hawkins, a national healthcare consulting firm, recently surveyed residents to find the top 9 things they consider when looking for a future practice, according to an AMA Wire report.

The survey prompted a 5 percent response rate, with over 24,000 surveys sent out and over 1,200 responses. The findings were included in Meritt Hawkins' 2015 Survey of Final-Year Medical Residents report.

Here are the top nine things residents consider when making a decision about where to practice, according to the survey:

1. Geographic location (69 percent)
2. Lifestyle (61 percent)
3. Adequate call hours and personal time (60 percent)
4. A good financial package (58 percent)
5. Proximity to family (48 percent)
6. Good medical facilities/equipment (48 percent)
7. Special support (32 percent)
8. Educational loan forgiveness (19 percent)
9. Low malpractice area (18 percent)
