Seven primary care physicians with Milwaukee-based Aurora Health Care are redirecting their referrals from a Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare facility to Aurora hospitals that have more hospitalists available, according to a Journal Times report.
The seven physicians see patients at two main Aurora clinics in Racine, Wis. In the past, they voluntarily admitted patients to Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints Hospital, also located in Racine. They will now redirect those referrals to Aurora hospitals in Cudahy and Kenosha, Wis.
The reason for the switch has to do with Aurora's switch to a new hospitalist medial model. Although All Saints has hospitalists, an Aurora spokesperson said the seven primary care physicians prefer to use Aurora hospitals. By referring patients to hospitalists, the physicians can curb their hospital duties and focus more on patient visits at their clinics. By spending part of their time at All Saints, the physicians thought wait times for appointments had grown too long, sometimes exceeding a month.
Patients can still choose between the Aurora hospitals and All Saints without losing their primary care physician at the Aurora clinic. Both sides said there are no hard feelings with the new arrangement.
