University of Texas plans to launch two new medical schools in 2016 with curricula based on innovations from AMA's Accelerating Change in Medical Education initiative.
Through the initiative, AMA sponsored programs at 11 medical schools to develop education models focused on preparing medical students for the changing healthcare environment.
UT educators met with faculty from schools participating in AMA's program to develop curricula for the new schools that include competency-based education and systems-based practice. The school system developed an online platform, called UTx, which offers personalized, self-paced online education tools, according to the report.
The UT system will have six medical schools with the addition of the two new schools: Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine.
"We want to design the curriculum around adult learning models," Sue Cox, MD, executive vice dean of academics and chair of medical education at Dell Medical School at UT Austin said in the statement. "How many of us sat in medical school for eight hours a day listening to a talking head? If we can get students actively learning and doing adaptive learning, we will improve their medical knowledge."
The Dell Medical School will admit a class of 50 students to start in the summer of 2016. Admissions information for UTRGV School of Medicine will be released pending state approval of its curriculum, which focuses on providing care for at-risk populations.
