Last year, the United States had 260,221 total actively practicing female physicians — representing 31.9 percent of all active physicians in the nation, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges' 2013 State Physician Workforce Data Book.
Some states had a greater percentage of female physicians than the nation as a whole. For example, 40 percent of physicians in Washington, D.C., last year were women.
Behind D.C., the following 10 states had the highest percentage of practicing female physicians in 2012.
1. Massachusetts — 38.4 percent
2. Maryland — 36.8 percent
3. Vermont — 36.5 percent
4. New Mexico — 35.9 percent
5. New York — 35.4 percent
6. Illinois — 35.3 percent
7. Alaska — 35.1 percent
8. Rhode Island — 35.1 percent
9. Oregon — 34.6 percent
10. Colorado — 34.6 percent
