Thousands of California nurses will walk off their jobs Thursday in what may be the country's largest nursing strike to date, according to a Sacramento Bee report.
More than 23,000 nurses from more than 30 Sutter Health and Kaiser Permanente hospitals are expected to take part in the one-day strike, which is organized by the California Nurses Association and the National Union of Healthcare Workers.
Nurses are striking in opposition to recent concessions Sutter Health has posed, such as sharp increases in health premiums and retirement contributions and the elimination of paid sick leave. In response, Kaiser has planned "sympathy" walkouts and demonstrations for Sutter's nurses.
A spokesperson for the CNA has said Sutter is "not the March of Dimes" but one of the largest, most profitable hospital chains in the state that has "taken a very hard line with RNs," according to the report.
The walkouts are expected to take place primarily in California's Bay Area and Kaiser's Sacramento-area hospitals.
