Which states have the most, least Medicare-certified rural health clinics?

There are a total of 3,950 rural health clinics across the United States, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation's 2012 report. RHCs are federally qualified health clinics that are certified to receive Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. RHCs are of critical importance for securing healthcare services for residents outside of urban areas who cannot otherwise access healthcare providers.

The following five states have the most Medicare certified RHCs, according to KFF:

1. Missouri — 374 RHCs

2. Texas — 313

3. California — 293

4. Illinois — 221

5. Kansas — 179

The following states have the least Medicare certified RHCs:

1. Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Washington D.C. — 0

2. Massachusetts — 1

3. Hawaii and Alaska— 2

4. Nevada — 9

5. New York — 10
