U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) held a town hall meeting in Cleveland yesterday to discuss Cleveland-based MetroHealth's plans to cut 450 jobs due to uncertain finances and high charity care costs, according to a Plain Dealer report.
At the meeting, Rep. Kucinich told attendees, "No one hospital should be expected to take the burden of charity care in the Cleveland community." He also "repeatedly" brought up the need for Cleveland Clinic to provide financial help to the struggling system, something he previously has called for, according to the report. The Clinic previously responded by saying it continues to work with other health systems in the area to ensure access to care.
Rep. Kucinich criticized MetroHealth for the layoffs, adding that the health system is "not going to get away with this," according to the report.
Metro Health — a tax-supported, safety net system — faces a $1.1 million loss for the year.
