Two Board Members at Salinas Valley Memorial Walk Out Over Concerns Board Violated Open Meeting Law

Two board members at Salinas (Calif.) Valley Memorial Healthcare System walked out of a meeting last week after voicing concerns that the meeting violated the state's Open Meeting Act, which requires government boards and commissions to open their meetings to the public unless specifically authorized, according to a The Californian report.

Board member Patrick Egan asked the board to halt the meeting until an attorney could perform a full legal review to determine if the closed-door session was permissible. He was supported by one other board member, Nathan Olivas, and both men left the meeting, which the other board members continued.

The specific topic of discussion at the meeting was not revealed. However, the health system received a recommendation from consulting firm McKinsey & Co. earlier this year to merge or affiliate with another system.
