Healthcare and biopharmaceutical leaders from across the globe gathered at the World Economic Forum, which is taking place Jan. 22-25 in Davos, Switzerland, STAT News reports.
Four things to know:
1. The annual meeting features the heads and members of more than 100 governments, top executives from more than 1,000 global companies, and the leaders of international and nongovernmental organizations, among others.
2. This year's attendees include Novartis CEO Vasant Narasimhan, MD; healthcare philanthropist and Microsoft founder Bill Gates; former CDC Director Julie Gerberding, MD; and Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, among other speakers.
3. Top officials from the Trump administration, however, will not be in attendance. National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins, MD, PhD, who helped plan certain sessions and was scheduled to participate, was forced to cancel his trip due to the ongoing government shutdown, STAT reports. President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and several other U.S. officials were also scheduled to attend but were forced to cancel.
4. The 2019 summit will feature panels on vaccine development, financial investment in global health, and the need to address mental health issues and challenges.
