Elizabeth Holmes, CEO of Palo Alto, Calif.-based Theranos, a struggling multibillion-dollar blood testing startup, is hosting a fundraiser next Monday for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, according to tech website Re/code.
Ms. Holmes plans to host the fundraiser at Theranos' Palo Alto headquarters. The event will feature a conversation with Chelsea Clinton, Hillary's daughter, and those who pay $2,700 can attend a special reception with Chelsea, according to the report. Ticket prices start at $100 for students and $250 for "friends," and go up from there, according to the report.
Ms. Holmes has a history of supporting Ms. Clinton, and she participated in the Clinton Foundation's January 2015 "Health Matters Summit" as well as its September 2015 "Future of Impact" event, according to Re/code.
The company has fallen from grace in the eyes of many in the healthcare industry due to a pair of investigative reports featured in The Wall Street Journal that challenged many of the company's claims and technologies. Following these reports, a partnership with Safeway dissolved and its deal with Walgreens teeters on collapse. The company also lost seven board members, including political figures like former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Schultz, as well as former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.). Despite these setbacks, Theranos has continued to move forward.
