Rally at Harlem Hospital Protests Budget Cuts, Restructuring Efforts

Doctors Council SEIU recently held a rally to "protect patient care" at Harlem Hospital Center in New York City, organizing about 100 employees and local residents to protest what they called the imminent decline of the hospital, according to a Columbia Spectator report.

The rally was organized to bring attention to recent budget cuts and restructuring efforts by New York City's Health and Hospital Corporation, which oversees Harlem Hospital.

According to the report, 10 percent of physician positions have remained unfilled for the past year. The hospital will lay off 10 percent of doctors by Dec. 31. Starting in 2011, Columbia University will play a decreased role in the hospital's administration, and the report estimated a good number of physicians will leave as a result.
