A report by the Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania found that hospitals in the state provided more than 585,000 hospital and hospital service-related jobs and $98.9 billion to the state's economy in 2010, according to an HAP news release.
The report, "Pennsylvania’s Hospitals Critical to State Economy," also found that of Pennsylvania's 67 counties, 55 counties counted hospitals as one of their top five employers.
In 2010, Pennsylvania hospitals cared for 1.7 million inpatients, 38 million outpatients, 5.8 million ER patients and delivered 133,000 babies, according to the report.
The report also outlined hospitals' challenges for the future — including the effects of a weaker economy, pressure on reimbursements and anticipated higher expense growth.
HAP also criticized Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett's proposed budget, which includes $333.3 million in cuts to hospitals from Medicaid. The HAP says the proposed cuts could jeopardize thousands of jobs and access to care.
