Massena (N.Y.) Memorial Hospital officials are warning community members of a phone scam involving phony hospital employees asking people for personal information such as credit card numbers, according to North Country Now.
In the "phone spoofing" fraud, scammers utilize hospital phone numbers to request personal information. Multiple local residents reported these incidents to local authorities, who warned them not to give any information over the phone. They added that anyone who receives a call from someone claiming to be a Massena official should hang up and call the hospital.
"Each of the incidents we are aware of has been reported to local police officials. We intend to apply the full weight of the law to anyone we can determine with law enforcements assistance is conducting these 'masking' phone calls," Bob Wolleben, CEO of Massena Memorial Hospital, told North Country Now.
