Raleigh, N.C.-based Rex Healthcare has received approval for two certificate of needs from the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation, allowing the health system to move forward with plans to build a 50-bed hospital in Holly Springs, N.C., as well begin phase one of a larger expansion project that will relocate 115 acute beds at Rex's Raleigh location and consolidate existing heart and vascular services, according to a Rex news release.
The decision allows Rex, owned by UNC Health Care, to expand its services in Wake County, which has drawn fire from WakeMed Health & Hospitals, also based in Raleigh, which said the move could duplicate services.
Both WakeMed and Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health also sought approval to add beds in Wake County. Novant was denied its request, while WakeMed was granted approval for 51 additional bed, 50 less than the system originally requested, according to a Triangle Business Journal report.
