Question: Can you share your best advice for motivating your teams?
Dr. Reed Hansen: Motivation is all about mutual respect and purpose, which provides a basis for team success. Engaging the team members as professionals, as well as utilizing their skillsets, [creates] an environment to motivate and stretch individuals to their highest potential. Another key approach for motivation is giving praise for a job well done [and] mentoring in those times when the goal has not been met.
Q: What is the No. 1 thing you wish you knew before taking a leadership post at your organization?
RH: [I wish I understood] the difficulty of transitioning, [or] letting go, from being a subject matter expert and rapidly adjusting to a role where you rely on many other individuals to drive success.
Q: What’s the best thing you’ve read lately:
RH: Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic by Sam Quinones. [It is] a non-fiction book with great history and progression of the opiate crisis we have today. The book addresses stigma, pharmaceutical company influence, people as victims and the broad impact [of the epidemic] on the American society.
