Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont, Minn., will cut six positions as it restructures surgical services, effective Jan. 2, the health system said.
Mayo-Fairmont attributed the decision to low patient demand for after-hours and weekend surgeries.
This year, there have only been one to two surgeries per week during those times, the health system said Nov. 6. Mayo-Fairmont will adjust the operating room schedule "to make the best use of resources" and "align with patient demand."
The health system said surgeries (except ear, nose and throat) will remain four days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and emergency C-sections will continue to be available anytime. Effective Jan. 2, ear, nose and throat surgeries will be referred to Mayo Clinic Health System's campus in Mankato, Minn.
Restructuring surgical services will result in the elimination of four nursing positions, one health unit coordinator and one sterile processing technician, according to Mayo-Fairmont.
The health system said it will help affected employees find and applying for new positions within the organization.
