Las Vegas hospitals remember victims of mass shooting on anniversary

Hospitals in the Las Vegas area paused Oct. 1 to remember the anniversary of last year's mass shooting, according to a Las Vegas Review-Journal report.

Staff at Dignity Health-St. Rose Dominican Hospital Siena campus recited a prayer. At Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, chaplains shook hands and hugged workers. A therapy dog and tissue boxes were available.

"There's a feeling in the air, but it's kind of a good feeling; it's hope," emergency nurse Deena Lakes told the Review-Journal as she touched the therapy dog's head Oct. 1.

Staff at St. Rose in Henderson, Nev., read the names of the 58 people who died in last year's tragedy and unveiled a Remembrance Lights memorial with the same number of candlelike lights, according to the report. The same installation was expected at other hospital campuses.

Other reported remembrance activities included:

  • Breakfast for staff at Sunrise Hospital
  • Moments of silence at Sunrise, Southern Hills and St. Rose Dominican hospitals
  • Balloon release the evening of Oct. 1 at Valley Health System hospitals
  • A "Stop the Bleed" training class for the public at University Medical Center
