Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente has been named the official team physician for the Golden State Warriors basketball team, the healthcare giant and the NBA announced.
The announcement is part of an expanded partnership between the NBA and Kaiser.
Under the partnership, Kaiser will provide sports medicine care to professional basketball athletes through its new 16,000-square-foot Northern California Sports Medicine Center in San Francisco, which is scheduled to open in late July or early August, according to a news release. Kaiser said clinicians at the center will offer comprehensive sports medicine care, including physical therapy and concussion care. Kaiser also operates a sports medicine center in Sacramento, Calif., and a sports medicine facility in Elk Grove, Calif.
"Our sports medicine care emphasizes training and injury prevention, early intervention and injury correction to return athletes to peak functionality as quickly as possible," said Richard Isaacs, MD, CEO and executive director of the Permanente Medical Group. "And the new Mission Bay Sports Medicine Center enhances our comprehensive delivery of sports-related specialty care services throughout the Bay Area."
As part of the partnership, Kaiser and the NBA will also create Thrive City, an 11-acre mixed-use, privately financed complex offering health and wellness programs, including Get Fit clinics, yoga sessions, ice skating and farmers markets, according the news release.
Thrive City — which will also include public art, retail and restaurants— will be near the new Chase Center, a sports and entertainment arena slated to open this fall in San Francisco's Mission Bay neighborhood.
The complex is expected to open this summer with a Get Fit clinic, with more programming to follow.
