David Handel, a leader in healthcare management, died on July 31, 2024. His career, spanning over four decades, was marked by remarkable leadership and dedication to improving healthcare systems.
Mr. Handel held senior management positions at multiple institutions, including Northwestern University Medical Center, Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Indiana University Hospitals. In 1985, he moved to Indianapolis to become the CEO of IU Hospitals, encompassing University and Riley Hospitals.
One of his significant achievements was his crucial role in the legal consolidation of Methodist Hospital and IU Hospitals, creating Clarian, now Indiana University Health. Mr. Handel served as the first executive vice president and COO of Clarian, demonstrating exceptional vision and leadership.
Upon retiring from Clarian in 2004, David continued to contribute to the healthcare community as the director of the Indiana University Masters of Health administration program. His dedication extended to serving on the boards of the Sisters of St. Francis Health System, St. Vincent Health and the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indianapolis. In 2011, he fully retired but remained active by founding the Executive Volunteer Services Program, where high-level retired executives provided pro bono assistance to local nonprofits.
David Handel's legacy in healthcare and his dedication to his family and community will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
