Illinois' St. Elizabeth Hospital May Be Relocated

Springfield, Ill.-based Hospital Sisters Health System plans to purchase 105 acres in O'Fallon, Ill., that could be the location of a new St. Elizabeth's Hospital, which is currently in Belleville, Ill., according to a Belleville News-Democrat report.

Mark Reifsteck, president of the Southern Illinois Division of Hospital Sisters Health System, said the system has not decided the specific use of the site, which is expected to cost $18 million.

Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert, however, believes hospital leaders intend to move St. Elizabeth's out of Belleville, where it has operated for 136 years. He opposes the potential move and said he has offered to help improve St. Elizabeth's current facility.
