Healthcare leaders on staying compliant with new laws and regulations

Becker's asked healthcare leaders about the steps they take to stay updated on new laws and regulations to ensure compliance.

Here are their responses, presented alphabetically.

Dawn Geisert
Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer of Beaumont Health (Southfield, Mich.)

I take a few minutes of my day to scan daily compilation emails from various industry groups I participate in, including American Health Lawyers Association and the Michigan Hospital Association.  I also make it a point to review the Federal Register daily updates.  These sources allow me to readily identify any new regulations or updates and initiate our team’s regulatory change management process.

Anna James
Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Government Relations for Sentara Healthcare (Norfolk, Va.)

It's an ongoing process in which my team and I work closely with local, state and federal legislators and regulatory agencies to remain well-informed. We also monitor for healthcare industry trends that could produce potential regulatory changes which may impact our integrated delivery network.

Erin Lewis
Vice President of Legal Services and Deputy General Counsel for Indiana University Health (Indianapolis)

I keep updated on new laws and regulations the old-fashioned way — I read.  A lot. Client alerts, news blasts, articles, journal summaries, you name it. I start with the actual text of the law or regulation and then turn to the secondary sources. I find that each piece has a slightly different focus and provides me with a different perspective.

Beverly Wallace, BSN
Hospital Compliance Officer for Harper University, Hutzel Women's, Detroit Receiving and CVI-Heart hospitals (Detroit)

Detroit Medical Center has a comprehensive, robust compliance program. Additionally, there is a dedicated compliance officer at each of its facilities who assures compliance with company policy and standards of conduct, state and federal laws.

The compliance officer leads the implementation and continued development of the compliance program in accordance with the compliance charter. The compliance officer provides education and training to staff, correcting any irregularities that do not align with the company's mission statement.
