Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., released a veteran healthcare plan Sept. 7.
Here are five quick takeaways on her plan:
- Ms. Harris' plan focuses on extending healthcare services and housing options to veterans with "other-than-honorable" discharges. Her campaign estimates legislative changes could make VA healthcare and housing assistance available to more than 500,000 additional veterans.
- Ms. Harris would also direct the Defense Department to review "other-than-honorable" discharges for bias and other factors, like post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and sexual assault, which may have contributed to misconduct.
- She pledged to complete the VA and Pentagon's EHR integration by the end of her first term.
- Ms. Harris would direct Congress to create a block grant for states to help connect homeless veterans to transitional housing.
- She also committed to reversing the Trump administration's ban on military service for transgender people.
