Martin Memorial Health System in Stuart, Fla., will move forward with plans to develop an 80-bed hospital in Port St. Lucie, Fla., despite an appeal from HCA on the facility's certificate of need, according to a TCPalm report.
Martin Memorial received certificate of need approval from the state in 2007, which HCA appealed. HCA owns Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in Fort Pierce, Fla., and St. Lucie Medical Center in Port St. Lucie.
In July 2009, an administrative law judge ruled in favor or Martin Memorial, and the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration approved the project in Dec. 2009.
HCA then appealed to the 1st District Court of Appeal. Oral arguments in the appeal are scheduled for Oct. 19.
A spokesperson for Martin Memorial said the system will move forward with its plans despite the appeal and added that the delays have cost the system $1.5 million, according to the report.
